Minnie-Belle Lake has had a protective slot limit of24”-36” to provide fishing opportunities for medium and larger size Pike in the area and provide better size structure across the population. The regulation has met those stated goals, while still allowing harvest below the slot for those who want to take some fish home. Lake of the Woods (May 11th – April 14th) – Effective March 1st 2019 the winter combined possession limit for Walleye and Sauger was reduced from eight to six, with no more than four Walleye. The protected slot of 19½ inches to 28 inches for Walleye remains in effect, with one fish over 28 inches allowed in possession.

I voted for 6 fish with slot because I have 3 kids and a wife who like to eat walleye(not sunfish or perch,there is a difference in taste!) and I have grandparents who like to eat fish but can't get out themselves. So I give them some. I like the protected slot but I would like the 6 fish limit to stay. We want to remind people who catch walleyes within the slot restricted area (17-26 inches) that a quick return to the water is very important. It the fish has been caught with live bait on a single hook, cutting the line and releasing it is better than trying to dislodge the hook, especially if the hook is not very easily removed.

The best dock fishing is in spring and fall, but our guests enjoy fishing off the dock all summer long too. What do I need to know to fish in Voyageurs National Park?

To fish in Voyageurs National Park, you only need a MN Fishing license. All Voyageurs National Park Lakes, including Kabetogama, are governed by the MN DNR. There are no fishing regulations specific to the National Park. To help aid healthy populations of fish, specific criteria for keeping the fish you catch have been established by the MN DNR.

Minnesota Fishing License Information

Family Friendly Fishing – here in Minnesota youth under the age of 16 fish for free under their parent’s license! Purchase your MN Fishing license online in advance or stop at one of the local Kabetogama establishments that sell them (within 3 miles from our resort). We recommend The Gateway General. There is a separate license for residents of Minnesota and “out of state” licenses. Be sure to scroll to the right section online. If you are a nonresident, you may want to consider other options:

• A 7 day license for a week of vacation fishing. If you are visiting only once you can save enough for a tank of gas!
• Spouse and Family License options and discounts for “out of state” guests too.

• Walleye: All fish from 17-28″ must be immediately released. One trophy fish over 28″ is allowed in possession.
• Northern Pike: limit of 3 (not more than 1 trophy fish over 30″ in possession.
